Tanzania – here I come!

frodo19_receipt

It’s just been confirmed that my October fundraising trip to Tanzania, East Africa, is going to happen. I’m very excited!

The project has been organised by Charity Challenge and I shall be raising money for Canine Partners – a charity that provides highly trained assistance dogs for people with disabilities.

When I visited the centre, I saw how their young puppies play with tug toys – one of the trainers explained how this can lead to pulling their future partner up in bed and opening doors.

Another group were being taught how to pick items up off the floor and bring them back to the trainer – everything’s done in a spirit of play with lots of rewards for the eager dogs.

So, my target is £3,000 – a huge amount! If you can help I shall be eternally grateful! My secure page is at

Oh and I forgot to say that while in Tanzania I shall be putting on my steel-capped boots (yes, I do have a pair!) and working on a building site for 10 days. Choba Primary School is being built by the local community and Charity Challenge send out regular teams of between 10 and 20 people to lend a helping hand. So I could be digging foundations, plastering, painting – all depends on the stage the building works is at. Many of the children that will be attending the school are orphans from the Aids crisis in Africa.

So if you can help, that would be great. Canine Partners provide dogs that ‘do things’ for their owners – but it’s also about the dogs helping the owners to build self-esteem, self-confidence and motivation. And if you have a dog, you’ll understand that perfectly.

Here’s Cheryl Smith with her dog Orca. She says, “Orca is fantastic. He goes everywhere with me and I feel lost without him. He’s my peace of mind.”

Congratulations – and a poem for Hector the dog

We’re all looking on with happiness at the exciting events in the United States. Hello to all our American friends and congratulations on Barack Obama becoming President.

This is a poem sent to me by my father-in-law, Michael Bassey, who has a gorgeous Golden Retriever called Hector.
Hector has just reached eleven and this is a poem he wrote for him.

Hector’s now

Eleven years old;

Muzzle grey

But coat still gold.

Cavorts in the wood

With a glint in his eye.

Surely ‘tis real

The camera can’t lie.

Or is it the dog

Who is the deceiver?

‘Tis a trait not unknown

In a golden retriever.

Wordless Wednesday: Our local patch

This is where I walk the dogs almost every day (sometimes we visit the woods). The pic was taken a few days ago and it was very, very cold. The English Channel is in the background.

On a cold and frosty morning

Here we go round the mulberry bush
The mulberry bush, the mulberry bush
Here we go round the mulberry bush
On a cold and frosty morning

I don’t think there is a mulberry bush where we walk, but this was the song I was singing in my mind when we walked this morning. So beautiful – crispy and frosty everywhere – sun shining brightly and blue skies as far as the eye could see.

The dogs were joyous – especially Georgie who loves the cold. She spent the first 10 minutes or so just rolling in the white grass and then running round in circles at top speed! Brilliant – such an expression of ‘Happy to be alive’. One of the many reasons I LOVE DOGS!

Jessie’s Reunion

Today was a very special day – firstly it snowed! Hoorah! Not the thick snow of a New York winter but the light icing-sugar-dusting on a chocolate cake.

Secondly, Jessie met the rest of her family.

When we rehomed her two years ago, we were lucky in that she had been returned to the original family who had bred her. So when Mark and I met her for the first time we were able to meet Mum, Grandma and two other siblings.

Today we arranged a family reunion. The picures show, left to right on the log, Rose (Mum), Clover (Grandma), Miffy (sister), and in front, Jessie and Alfie (brother), all showing remarkable self-control!

Below we have Rose and Clover (Mum and Grandma) looking very cute but rather chilly. There’s not a great deal of family resemblance (Dad is a Yellow Lab) but they do all have gorgeous brown eyes as well as being very beautiful dogs. The younger ones had a lovely time today chasing each other through the woods :)

Happy Families!

A dog owner’s car

I’m always so embarrassed taking our car to be cleaned. The manager of the car wash looks at it in disbelief and then starts listing all the things that need to be done. And the list seems to go on for ever . . . I almost expect him to say at the end, “And if you want all that done, it’ll cost you £200.” But actually it’s always pretty reasonable.

Look at the photos if you dare!! Obviously this is before ‘the treatment’! I’ll leave you to imagine the shiny, squeaky clean, mud-free, sweet-smelling vehicle that emerged an hour later :)

And finally, the firm that is responsible for the transformation!
