Hello. I’m Hilary, a dog-crazy English woman living in Brighton.
I used to be a full-time primary school teacher living and working in East London. Sometimes it was hard to know what season we were in and having a dog was a very distant dream.
Becoming a Dyslexia Tutor and working with children when school was over for the day, was the first step to a different kind of life. Then we moved to Brighton, got Georgie, our Golden Retriever, and now life is very different from those London years.
After feeding the dogs/watering the plants/making tea etc, I work on my websites in the morning and then walk Georgie and Jessie (see below).
I’m married to Mark, a jazz trombonist, and the dogs sleep at his feet while he practises! Some of our doggy friends who come to stay do seem a little alarmed at first but dogs are very adaptable and they soon get used to it!
The Dog Blog is a regular peep into the lives of Georgie, our very friendly Golden Retriever, and Jessie, our lively, black Labrador-Cross. We live in Sussex, England.
Here’s a quick profile of each of them:

Hi Hilary:
Michael told me about your blog. I have really enjoyed reading it and seeing the pictures of your “best friends”.
Shirley
Hi Shirley!
We were only looking at your postcard yesterday dreaming about a trip on a train across your beautiful country.
How lovely to hear from you
Do you have a blog or website?
What a great site Hilary! Dogs are the reason I believe there is a higher power at work somewhere. I’ve never known such peace in the world until my dog puts her chin on my lap and she looks up at me with those red/brown eyes. Or when she sees that I’m settled for the night and she finally lays down and settles herself. I always come first for her and she for I.
Thank you for your kind words about the site. It’s so true what you say – they really care for us in such a deep way and of course we for them. Dogs are the best!!
Beautiful dogs and a nice blog, I added you to my blog roll, thanks for showing us your pretty pooches.

Hi Hilary;
Pete Dowan here !
I realize that there is very little chance that this e-mail will result in anything, but that’s better than the zero chance if I didn’t try. I was googling for Dog related blogs and I came across your site and thought I’d contact you.
I am a medically disabled songwriter from St Catharines, Ontario, Canada, and have written many songs about many different subjects and in several different styles.
One song in particular was a personal thank you to my dog. The song is called “Good Friend”.
I mention my disability because various factors of my condition stop me from being able to use professional studios to record my songs, so I have to do them here, at home, in my basement, on donated equipment from musicians I used to work with. For the same reason, I also am unable to perform my music live.
HISTORY OF THE SONG::: For the first few years that I had my current health condition I had a very difficult time walking. One of my doctors figured out the reason, and when that was dealt with, it was up to me to get myself “going”. That’s where our dog, Scuttle, came in. He bugged me daily to take him out … wouldn’t let up until I did so. His determination was catching, and within a year we were both going on outings that I never dreamed I’d be able to do again. As a thank you, I wrote the above mentioned song for him. (R.I.P. my boy)
If you know it’s about a dog, the lyrics jump out at you as being obvious, but if you don’t, there’s only one line that definitely points to it.
I was wondering if you’d like to hear the song, since your blog is about dogs and for dog people. I can send you an MP3, a short term link or it can be heard on my “MySpace” page … which is myspace.com/petedowan … the third song on the list. If you would give it a listen, I’d love to get your opinion on it.
I DO understand if you’d rather not.
Have a great day, and keep smiling.
Musically Yours,

Hi Hilary,
I am adding your blog to my blog surfer. I love the profiles of your dogs–especially that Jessie loves rolling in “fox poo”!
Just popped by for the first time and I am absolutely adding you to my list of regular reads. I too have a black lab and her name is Marley (we got her BEFORE the book Marley and Me came out and we adopted her with the name!).
I love your blog and can’t wait to keep reading!
Thank you Michelle and ‘Still Life’ for your kind words. Pleased you like the blog. Life’s rich with a dog (or 2!)
Hello from America. I REALLY enjoyed looking at all of your pics from England… beautiful countryside… beautiful, well-balanced dogs. (Makes me want to get a second dog!)
