Sunday Dog Walk On Sheepcote Valley in Brighton

Summer is here – well for today at least!

Today was one of those perfect days – and I’m sure the dogs agreed too. Though to be honest they seem happy in pouring rain, wild winds, heavy snow – basically they just love being ‘out and about’.

The blackberries are in season – earlier than usual due to this year’s very hot spring – and the dogs learnt long ago that free food is abundant in the bushes.

We had Millie walking with us today, the darker of the two Golden Retrievers – and she was also helping herself to the berries – as well as losing herself in the patch of dandelions in what we call ‘The Paddock’.

Sheepcote Valley is the walk next to Brighton Racecourse and it really is a very special area: beautiful wild flowers, amazing sea views, the freshest of air, and lots of dog-friendly people.

Brighton Snow December 2nd 2010

Overnight heavy snowfall in Brighton has turned the centre of town into a beautiful car free zone.

All trains in and out of Brighton have also been cancelled so transport has pretty much come to a standstill. And unlike last year there’ve been council workers clearing pavements and roads around the station – thank you guys – great job :)

Seeing as we couldn’t do our normal walk we headed for St Nicholas Rest Garden which is about 5-10 minutes away and Georgie and Jessie played in around 8″ powdery snow. They were very, very happy!

Devil’s Dyke Dog Walk

Devil’s Dyke is a local beauty spot just outside Brighton, part of the South Down’s Way with far reaching views across the South Downs and The Weald in southern England.

It’s an amazing place and we haven’t been there for a while on account of the cows! No-one wants a dog who’s rolled in a cow pat, believe me!

But last night I took a chance and only having the one dog with me we parked up and enjoyed an incredible evening walk.

Georgie, our Golden Retriever, knows this place well as we used to come here quite a bit when she was a puppy. She was clearly delighted to be back!

There were cows – but they didn’t get in our way. Georgie did have a very quick roll in a cow pat and needed to have a shower when we got home but I was in a good mood and didn’t mind!

If you come here, parking is now £2.00 which was a bit of a shock. You can also come by bus, the 77, usually open top, and there’s usually an ice cream van in the car-park which is always a bonus :)

If you haven’t been here before then go! It’s  a very special place and you can walk right along the South Down’s Way marvelling at the stunning Sussex countryside below.

Brighton beach on a wet February day

When I saw the weather forecast for this week – rain, rain, more rain – I decided to have some of our morning walks on Brighton beach.

Georgie, our Golden Retriever, gets absolutely filthy in Stanmer woods – and we have to drive from our house to get there.

So going to the beach saves on petrol, muddy towels, a filthy house, and two very mucky dogs. It also gives them busy street practice on the lead since we have to walk through town to get to the beach itself.

pebbles on brighton beach We’re not talking about a sandy beach I’m afraid. No, Brighton beach is well known for its pebbles and it’s not everybody’s cup of tea. But on a sunny day, you can’t beat it – funky, lively, with great ice cream if you know where to go.

Anyway, these pics are from this morning. Our second wet walk of the week (and it’s only Tuesday) – clothes, leads, collars are drying out yet again – but no mud and that’s got to be a good thing :)

First of all here’s Jessie with the Palace Pier behind – the pier with all the scary rides!

Wherever we go, Georgie manages to find a plastic bottle.

And finally, both fast asleep a few minutes ago :) zzzzzzz

Snow in Stanmer Woods and damage to the trees

Hungarian Vizsla meets snowman

For the time being at least, we’re back to normal in Brighton and all the snow has disappeared.

The dogs loved the snow and had lots of fun rolling around in the white stuff making dramatic snow sprays like high speed skiers at the bottom of a piste, as they skidded to catch tennis balls.

A sadder consequence was the damage to our wonderful trees in Stanmer Woods where we walk. It was a scene of carnage in some areas as the weight of the snow caused many, many branches to collapse.

These ancient trees took a heavy hit and have had to be considerably cut back as a result. The dogs found the fresh sawdust very enticing, especially Georgie, the Retriever, who just had to have a roll!

Let’s hope there’s no more snow – or if there is that there’s no more damage to these stunning trees.

New walk – pond, woods and great views

boxer-mastiff-view-brightonThanks to my friend Andy who showed me a new walk in Brighton* yesterday. Here’s Bailey, his Boxer-Mastiff cross, at the start of the walk.

When the weather’s really hot this walk is perfect cause there’s a big pond for the dogs to cool down in :)

We also met the handsome Moses, a Lab crossed with a NewFoundland. With a mix like that, it’s obvious he’s going to be a water baby! And look at the great log he found to have fun with!

So for the dogs there was the water to splash in as well as the woods to explore. For the humans there were fantastic views across Brighton as well as the knowledge that your dogs were having a fantastic time. A great walk – thanks Andy. Let’s do it again soon.

*Drive up the Ditchling Road, past the children’s playground and past the entrance to the golf club. On the right you’ll see a height restriction bar. Park in this small car park and walk across the fields towards the woods. There are several paths that lead through to the dew pond and from there you can walk safely in different directions with amazing views of Brighton.

Meet Buffalo and Hawk, Working Collies

working-collies-on quad-bike
I met these guys in Rottingdean, a village a few miles outside of Brighton.

Buffalo and Hawk had been helping with the shearing and had been at it for several hours when I met them. The farmer left the boys in his quad bike and had just popped into the village to grab some lunch. Hawk is Buffalo’s son and the dog closest to the camera.

It’s a very busy time for them at the moment and the dogs and the farmer looked in need of a quick lunch break. How I’d love to see these two in action.

Best In Show – Fern

IMGP0771Yesterday I spent the afternoon in Withdean Park, Brighton listening to my friends in Saxshop and enjoying all the dogs that had come along for the Fun Dog Show.

This is Fern, a beautiful Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen/Working Bearded Collie cross that won Best In Show. She’s a delightfully happy dog and still only 5 months old. As you can see her human family were very proud of her. Congratulations :)

Dog Walk in Stanmer Woods

100_5983

Today’s dog walk was in Stanmer Woods, an area to the north-east of Brighton, East Sussex.

It’s a favourite haunt of dog walkers for several reasons:
- no livestock if you keep to the inner woods
- no danger from cars/roads
- sheltered in bad weather due to all the trees
- it’s beautiful!

The photos were taken this morning and show my dogs as well as those of 3 friends (one is a professional dog walker). We take it slowly so that the dogs can chase, dig, roll in the leaves, drink from the roots of trees, stick noses down holes, snuffle, and generally have a good time :) Soon the woods will be full of bluebells and when they are, you’ll see them here first!

Kestrel in Brighton

UPDATE March 28th: I am officially twittering! Will see how it goes.

This is what I wrote on March 24th.
I have a twitter account which is sitting, waiting, full of potential. But something is stopping me from making my first ‘What are you doing?’ post.

I thought I’d see what other bloggers think. Do you twitter? Do you like it? Is it very time consuming?

I like WordPress you see – real people, great photos, genuine interactions. I’m making friends and building relationships. Can you do that on Twitter?

I’ve searched around the edges – for doggy people, animal lovers, people I might ‘like’. So many posts – some people have hundreds of posts coming into their accounts. How do you have time to read them all? Lots of rescued dogs stories, posts of dog suffering coming in. I felt quite wobbly the last time I went on. I felt bombarded by everyone shouting ‘Me, my site, my story, do something to help’.

So I’m in two minds. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

For now I’ll post my first twitter on Word Press:

‘Just had cup of tea. Dogs on sleep-over and house quiet. Blue skies in Brighton.’
