Sunday Dog Walk On Sheepcote Valley in Brighton

Summer is here – well for today at least!

Today was one of those perfect days – and I’m sure the dogs agreed too. Though to be honest they seem happy in pouring rain, wild winds, heavy snow – basically they just love being ‘out and about’.

The blackberries are in season – earlier than usual due to this year’s very hot spring – and the dogs learnt long ago that free food is abundant in the bushes.

We had Millie walking with us today, the darker of the two Golden Retrievers – and she was also helping herself to the berries – as well as losing herself in the patch of dandelions in what we call ‘The Paddock’.

Sheepcote Valley is the walk next to Brighton Racecourse and it really is a very special area: beautiful wild flowers, amazing sea views, the freshest of air, and lots of dog-friendly people.

Brighton Snow December 2nd 2010

Overnight heavy snowfall in Brighton has turned the centre of town into a beautiful car free zone.

All trains in and out of Brighton have also been cancelled so transport has pretty much come to a standstill. And unlike last year there’ve been council workers clearing pavements and roads around the station – thank you guys – great job :)

Seeing as we couldn’t do our normal walk we headed for St Nicholas Rest Garden which is about 5-10 minutes away and Georgie and Jessie played in around 8″ powdery snow. They were very, very happy!

Heavy Snow In Brighton

Buckingham Street, Brighton, snow

Our little part of Brighton is pretty treacherous when it snows and so it was a ‘local streets’ dog walk this morning. There was no way I was getting the car out. The roads turn into ice rinks and there are lots of steep hills so better safe than sorry. Let’s hope it clears soon and we can get back to the woods.

I noticed a few cars and vans had been abandoned on icy street corners as drivers had thought better of it -leaving their mobile numbers in the wind screen just in case their vehicles were in the way.

I took Georgie and Jessie out separately thus avoiding falling *** over **** if one of them saw something exciting on the other side of the road. As it was, they were pretty good and took it steady, leaving me to focus on keeping upright as we walked on some rather steep and icy pavements.

Jessie wore her red Cesar Millan backpack to give her something else to focus on and I took her out first to get rid of some of that energy.

Georgie came with me to our local churchyard and she LOVED it. She mostly rolled around in the snow and ever so often took off, running in large circles scooping up the snow in her mouth. Pure joy!

And I’ll finish with a few miscellaneous pics from this morning. First a gorgeous wire fox terrier we met who was enjoying the snow as much as Georgie. If her owner visits this page – I’ve forgotton your dog’s name – sorry!

I just liked this cool car!

And finally a little sparrow feeding on our patio – thank you to Joan for the ‘feeding platform’!

Barking in the fog

100_5994

It’s rather unnerving arriving at your destination only to find thick fog ahead. This was the scene this morning.

Before I knew this walk well, and whenever the fog descended, I used to keep to a very flat circular area in front of the carpark. I’d gather pieces of chalk and make a kind of arrow pointing up towards the carpark in case I got completely lost.

Now I know my way round really well and I’m not afraid of stretching further afield when the weather’s bad. Even so, it’s still a little scary seeing figures in the distance. Georgie barked at these people, which she never normally does, as if to say, ‘Friend or foe?’ Look carefully at the photo and you can just make the three figures out.

As we carried on with the walk, the fog lifted a little at least in the immediate area we were walking. I took this of Jessie because I noticed the wild bunch of daffodils just sitting on ther own.

By the time we got back to the car, my gloves and hat were off, jacket unzipped and the sun was out. It was as though the fog had never been there. We went from winter back to spring within an hour and a half. The joys of English weather!

Blustery Dog Walk

100_5891

The blue skies and warm weather of the last fortnight seem to be over for the time being. Back to furry ski gloves, fleecy hat and waterproofs.

For the dogs it’s perfect weather of course – neither too hot nor too cold and a fresh blustery wind to ruffle the fur.

Here are a couple of pics from this morning. I found a nice sheltered spot and plonked myself down on the grass. As soon as I do that, Georgie, the Retriever, starts digging frantically a few cms from where I’m sitting. She seems to have a surge of energy whenever I stop on the walk and as you can see from the photo below, digging with her paws is mixed in with poking her nose and mouth in the earth! This photo isn’t cropped by the way. They both just like to get as close as possible and this is how it came out. I thought it was funny!

heads down – follow your nose

I walk with a great dog walker on a regular basis. One of the things Karen likes to do is throw a handful of treats on the ground and let the dogs use their noses to find the goodies.

‘The Find’ proves how balanced packs behave – there’s never any fighting or disputes over food. Just a group of dogs with their heads down searching frantically.

I remember the first time Georgie (my Golden Retriever) was asked to ‘find’. She sat in front of Karen, as good as gold, waiting to be fed by hand as usual. Now, as you can see, she gets stuck in with the rest of them.

Friston Forest

Today we hooked up with Ali and Nat and their lovely handsome Golden Retriever Monty (on the right).

Friston Forest is about 45 minutes drive from our house and we go there every couple of months – what a treat. It’s so beautiful there – long footpaths, no sheep, fantastic views over the East Sussex countryside and the dogs LOVE it!

These are some of the pics fom this morning’s walk.

Melting snow and clear roads

As you may know from yesterday’s post, ‘snow stopped play’ which meant Georgie and Jessie had to do with a round the streets walk and no romping off the lead.

But by today the snow was melting, the roads had cleared and we were able to get to our favourite place.

Georgie was particularly ecstatic at the freedom again, and jumped and rolled and ran and stuffed her head in every bush as though she’d been in solitary confinement for a week.

Congratulations – and a poem for Hector the dog

We’re all looking on with happiness at the exciting events in the United States. Hello to all our American friends and congratulations on Barack Obama becoming President.

This is a poem sent to me by my father-in-law, Michael Bassey, who has a gorgeous Golden Retriever called Hector.
Hector has just reached eleven and this is a poem he wrote for him.

hector_in_woods

Hector’s now

Eleven years old;

Muzzle grey

But coat still gold.

Cavorts in the wood

With a glint in his eye.

Surely ‘tis real

The camera can’t lie.

Or is it the dog

Who is the deceiver?

‘Tis a trait not unknown

In a golden retriever.

Wordless Wednesday: sweet dreams

georgie_asleep

Sweet dreams Georgie – rabbits? rolling in the long grass? apple and cheese?

Do we even know whether dogs dream?
